Hi Paul,

If I understand correctly, you are asking about how to join that top plate that is “broken” by the duct so that it is continuous. As Molan mentions, what you have is normal, but personally, I like the idea of some continuity.

What I would do is what you already suggested: nail long steel straps to the top plate on both sides of the duct.
