A box made from Ipe and so much time spent shaping it. The lid fit to a button. A coat of finish, then time to secure the lid. Cut the 1/8" brass rods down to have room for plugs. Mixed the epoxy, dabbed a little in each hole, put the lid in position
and pushed the rods in. Went to close the lid and realized I had it upside down. I was so focused on the details didn't even notice..unreal.
Looks like the only option here is to destroy the lid and make another. Or maybe just leave it and move on.
Damn! I have done things like that before and it just makes you feel like a total ass! Sorry bud. Could you drill out the brass rods and go with a slightly larger diameter?
I agree with Richard. Drill the the rods out from the outside using one of these and install a larger diameter rod or Ipe peg. The hard part will be holding the box plumb on your drill press. Good luck.
Richard has the solution, I think. If I'm guessing right, the brass rods are at the back edge of the lid and run into the sides of the box. Carefully drill from the outside to remove the brass rod from one side. Then you should be able to lift the top out. Next drill a matching hole through the other side of the box, clean up the old brass rods in the lid and insert new rods through the sides to hold the lid in place.
Fixing mistakes is part of the fun! I'd say cut the handle off the lid and do something creative to add a new handle in the proper spot. Make it a little thicker so that you can overlay part of the handle onto the top of the box to hide the joint. You might use a contrasting wood colour or carve a shell shape or something onto the new handle. Take alook at the handle on this box. If you made it a little thicker than the front you could cut it to fit the notch and sit a little proud,
Thanks for the support and advice guys. It's great to have a forum like this to exchange ideas.. It looks like I will go with cutting out the lid and making a new one as I don't want to risk ruining the carcass.
It's not a mistake if you can fix it. We're all kind of chuckling at this because we've all been there, paying close attention to details and losing sight of the big picture. I think drilling out the pins is the way I'd go. I bet the expression on your face at that hideous moment you realized what you had done was priceless. I hope it wasn't a Christmas present.
If you want to tackle the drilling idea, I would suggest starting out with an undersized bit and drill into the brass about 1/4 inch or more. Then step up to a bit that matches a larger brass rod.
Finally, but a piece of tape on the lid that says "This side up"
how about..Cutting the pin in between the lid and the side of the box…Drill out and remove the rods..4 holes..Fill temporarily. then re drill with a 1/4" or 3/8" bit, plug with ipe , And than you would be back to square one..Hope it works out…box looks nice
Dremel cut off wheel to remove the lid, drill and tap the rods for a screw extractor, insert extractor, heat extractor with torch to transfer heat to the brass rod to loosen the epoxy and remove the rod. My work is done here.
I am assuming that you learned a valuable lesson here.
That being said, I would focus on drilling one side. Ipe is hard enough that you should be able to do it.
