Spammers are a tough issue. I ran boards for several years. The bigger they get, the more spammers they attract. AND… the spammers actually look for sites that have OTHER spammers because they know that’s a target they can get into.

And there’s a very fine line between blocking the highest percentage of spammers and also making your message boards so hard to use that people don’t bother and go elsewhere.

Think about this….. what would be a keyword used to find this site? I’ll give you a hint….. wood

What kind of spammers show up here most often? What are they pushing? See what I mean?

And another issue is the members themselves who don’t know they’ve been infected with malware and a spammer gets a free ride into the site.

This is a lot tougher than you might think. Hell, I’ve blocked whole countries but on an international site, that’s not a great thing to do.

Besides Captcha, the admins might look at Akismet and Honey Pot. Meanwhile there needs to be an active effort to delete the spammer profiles and that can be a big job, eating up a lot of time. Has to be done though.
