Paint will provide best protection and service life. Want to use an exterior alkyd oil primer, then quality latex paint.

Might get ten year service life from primer & latex. Chose a color she likes.

Oil, Sealers, and film finishes yearly re-applications recommended, might get 2 years needs sanding and re-application. Not sure staining will do much for appearance or service life.
