That system is only good for catching 10 micron and bigger dust particles.
You need to get down to 0.3 micron to get the really bad stuff.
Even the 2hp Harbor Freight collector many LJs use is good for 5 micron before modifying with cartridge filters.
I have no idea, from that picture, how the filters are arranged in that box and if they could be modified.

Also, in terns of removing the fan and motor for use as a stand alone collector, again, I have no idea how the fan is made or if it can be removed and used elsewhere.

Can you get pictures of the fan and or the inside of the box?

My first thought, when I saw that system was, “what a handy down draft sanding table I could make from that.”
