They have some kind of variable pully mounted to the spindle. The motor is a single speed 3/4 hp 1725 220V 3 phase. So getting a replacement motor should not be a issue. You can get decent 1 hp 1725 motors on ebay all the time for resonable amounts of money. Or if you really want it you can get a Balder or Lesson.
