If it was me, I’d look at the DeWalt 734.

This planer is a workhorse and is well within your budget (can be found under $500). Again, if it was me, I’d get a 734, set the remaining funds aside and save up some more, then buy and install a shelix head cutter in the machine.

The larger 735 is a good machine as well, but it is much heavier (well over 100 pounds) and right at the top of your budget. But it only has 1/2 inch wider capacity.
