If you decide to glue the wood to the plywood use a good wood flooring adhesive, that is not water based, that will allow for wood movement. Bostic Best is a urethane adhesive that is available at Lowes for about $6 in a caulking type tube. Spread the adhesive with a notched trowel to get a full spread. I don’t know if the other polyurethane adhesives will work the same. Don’t use something that will dry hard like liquid nails projects or Titebond.
