Agree that 4” will offer less resistance to air flow. However, you could have problems with using 4” for a vertical (updraft) run- say from a tool to a ceiling run. You re fighting gravity, making it hard to move larger (heavier) chips.

The bad sawdust is small like microscopic. Hand plane chips you can sweep up. Never saw a chip made by a power tool that I would even think would have a chance falling out of the air stream. Keep you filter clean or better yet if possible run the exhaust side outside no restriction that way.
