Dowels would be easiest to fit, floating tennons easier to align.

Can’t quite make it out from the pics, are the columns attaching to the wallnut insert in the top?
And if so is it thinner than the edge or the same thickness?
(thinner would give an option of an angle bracket inset under the top going from the column to the maple.)
