I was in the process of messaging someone who needs parts for a Stanley plane, and suggested 'NHplaneparts' on Ebay. Then I tried to find a link that my correspondee could use… and apparently he is nowhere to be found on Ebay.

Anybody know? I think he's on FB somewhere…but..

Oh thanks for that! I need some parts too. Yeah ebay fees and now that they own paypal and they raised all fees they double ream you coming and going.

I have noticed that a good many of the sellers I was buying stuff from are gone now. Had thought Covid but am guessing it was really just greed. Kinda sucks but then again wow the difference in price when buying direct.

Sorry to jump on the bandwagon, but yes, eBay lost me. The kicker was that they take 10% of your shipping, which they have nothing to do with. OK, enough.

If someone needs parts, maybe post a request in this forum, someone might just have it for cheaper, or even just shipping.

I'll trade parts for a Stanley No5 3-patent bed.

I'll have to admit, after me not selling for 20 years, coming back to Ebay as a seller surprised me with things like automatic sales tax payments and facilitated recordkeeping that didn't exist 20+ years ago.

There is a need for a less structured auction service, perhaps one with a classified wanted section where people can shout out items that they would like to see listed. If such a thing was successful, it would probably become a corporate bohemoth just like Ebay did.

Thanks for all the great replies! could an alternative to Ebay be created?

Theoretically yes it could. However it either needs to stay low tech and regional like Craigslist or it will eventually become a behemoth like ebay. To be like ebay you need an enormous amount of tech and an army of humans to keep the scammers at bay. I'm not saying ebay isnt being more than a tad greedy. However I think any platform that tries to do the same thing will be forced to gradually increase their fee percentage to keep up with overhead.

I don't work for free (usually), so I can't expect anyone else to. Still, 15% of "millions of things listed" is a lot of dinero.

I just ran across "Bonanza". They seem to be addressing the costs in their own way; you pick what rate you want depending on your desire for publicity. It says it's as low as 3.5%.

Has anyone else seen or heard if they are legitimate?

I hardly think that NET revenue of over 10 Billion dollars per year is just keeping up with overhead, LOL!

Well NET Revenue and NET Income are two entirely different things. Taking a look at the last 2 years worth of balance sheets for Ebay Inc found here we see that the $10.8 Billion earned in 2019 became $1.7 Billion in NET Income after expenses. Still a tidy sum by an stretch of the imagination so I stand by what I said that ebay is being greedy.

However any tech company willing to take them on will either have to be already established with excess capital to spend or be a start up. Most established tech companies with that kind of cash on hand are already greedy a-holes.

In the tech world the way a startup gets capital is through venture capitalist funding. The typical way you pay them back is by getting popular and going public via an IPO. Which will put you at the behest of your shareholders which will in turn make your once honest start up a greedy behemoth like eBay.

I wonder if a national, er North American site within Facebook would work? Hmm…then a secure site link, like Paypal for managing the cash flow. Restrict it to heritage tools maybe, to keep the scammers uninterested. Vendors having their own 'stores'. There are website platforms that could work, if not within FB.
Is anything like this already being done online?

Has anyone got an opinion on Bonanza?

- drsurfrat
Well, they have a miter box that's overpriced and has the saw in backwards so it must be a lot like Ebay ;-)

I'd never heard of Bonanza before but there is a lot of listings in the "tools" section. Don't have time to look much now but I'll definitely check it out some more later.

Kenny, is $60 too much? I have no clue about miter boxes.
miter box
Still wondering about Bonanza. They have some delusional prices, but that's the sellers, not the site.
