If allowed, It is useful to bring a small hand plane along and clean up a portion to reveal a smooth surface. Wet it to look for figure.

When buying lumber for figure, I expect to confirm that figure since it ups the price. For lumber called out only by species, any detail of the surface is not expected other than the normal grading callout.
