Luan is in a word (okay two words) “Not Mahogany”
Boatbuilders sometimes refer to it as “Jungle Cedar” which is truly unfair to Cedar.
Seriously it comes in a wide range of qualities. The darker (harder, reder) ones are actually very good and the lighter (softer, whiter) ones generally are very …. not so good.

Thats funny because I just bought some “Utility Panels” at home depot last week to fix my travel trailer roof. Its made from “hard wood” from Malaysia. Looks like typical lauan ply. But while cutting it and moving it I would get wiffs of what I thought was cedar, even though I know there is no cedar in this plywood. Kind of odd.
