Some WW vises are just that way; the vise screw protrudes above the rods that the vise front slides on. The only fix is another vise that does not do that.

In practice, it should not be a problem in most cases, because the workpiece should be supported by the clamping force of the vise faces, not the bottom rails/screw (which are likely oily anyway). I would not rest a workpiece directly on the rails/screw; I would use a scrap of wood resting on the rails/screw to protect the workpiece if needed.
