...I have about 50 acres of Walnut, hickory, white, black and red oak. A nearby mill can saw the trees for me at little cost. For my purposes I can t justify the added cost of the spiral cutterhead….

If you plan on planing 50 acres of wood, then you will save money in the long run with a helical carbide segmented cutter head such as Byrd Shelix. Otherwise a lot of time and or money will be spent on sharpening and setting straight blades. Before buying a used machine, check to see if a replacement head is available for that machine.
