I managed to blow a capacitor on my new bandsaw :(. Laguna tech support very kindly sent me a replacement motor.

Has anyone here had experiencing swapping one of these out? It's not obvious to me what the minimum amount of disassembly is or the order in which to do it.

Do I remove this set screw first to remove the gear? Is there another way to remove tension from the bolt?

I can wait until the tech returns my mail but figured someone here might know.

Wow - they sent you a new motor just because a $10 capacitor blew?!? That is service!
As for removal… can't really help with specifics, but unless the new motor also came with a new pulley, you are going to have to remove that one and move it over to the new one - so yes, the set screw needs to be loosened to take the pulley off. Removing the belt first will help make things easier.

Cheers,
Brad

They are a great company and the products (I have >1) are great.

I feel like a dolt, but can't see how to detention the belt. might be that you loosen the mount bolts for the frame and then shift it up? If someone knows, that would be awesome, otherwise I'll wait.

The motor, if under their warranty, is probably also under their supplier's warranty, so that's the "Line Replaceable Unit". At some point, a factory technician will replace the capacitor, clean and return the motor to "replacement stock".

I have noticed that major manufacturers seem to be cutting the voltage ratings on their motor caps. The rule used to be to use caps rated at 2x the working voltage of the application. I noticed Grizzly has changed replacement parts on some of their machines, and is supplying lower voltage rated replacement capacitors. Save a penny here and there, until enough customers get mad and leave. Maybe they don't expect their machines to last >20 years anymore (or they don't expect to be in that business in another 20 years).

Closing this out…

Laguna support has been great!! They are busy so it's generally a callback model if you phone, but they were very willing to set up an email-only case for me as that is just easier (and I could send pictures).

To the poster who said that the manual should cover belt removal, it did! And that was indeed part of the job.

In all, these were the steps:

1. loosen both mount bolts for the motor.

2. Have an assistant lift the motor so that it removes tension from the belt.

3. remove the set screws from the pulley on the motor. This will not pop off as it runs into the wheel. BUT…

4. fully remove the bolts and as you back out the motor, remove the pulley.

5. motor is off!

6. slide the new motor on, taking care to begin installation of the pulley as you do so. there is a little metal "tab" that slides into a slot of the driveshaft and that the pulley receives (to prevent it from spinning, I guess). Make sure that is seated in this step.

7. attach the bolts (aligning these is probably the hardest part once you understand the procedure here).

8. reinstall the belt and ensure it is properly centered.

9. align the pulley so that it does not contact the disc (for the disc brake).

10. push the motor down to tension the belt. BUT do not push it so far that the metal tab can contact the wheel. There can be a little play in the wheel, so push it into the cabinet and make sure there is no contact with the tab in the most extreme position.

11. tighten everything, swap out wiring and that's it!

HUGE thanks to Travis @ Laguna and to the Laguna team for a great product.
