thanks for the clarifications. i think i ll start cutting back on the oil in the additional coats.

I would do samples. From a durability or application standpoint, you can totally leave the oil out. It provides a look and slows dry time and not much else.

The thinner is what will determine build. More thinner=less solids and vise versa. More solids=more build of finish.

But the first few coats, you want thin. Without thinning it just sits on top and you wipe most of it off. It also won’t level out as much.
