If the wood is rough sawn as you say I would suggest sanding with 100 grit sandpaper after you apply the first coat of primer. That will remove the “sharp” wood fibers that will form with the primer paint (you may need to apply a second coat of primer if sanding exposed the wood again) and sanding will also make it easier to apply the finish coat. Also ask Lowes for their recommendation of primer to go with the paint you use. I would stay away from “oil” based because of the odor.
