Don, I definitely considered that. Once these are lamps are made and out in the world, someone could copy them. The risk w/putting the 3D models out there now is that someone could copy them and sell them before I can. But in order to do that, they have to go through all the effort of finding a willing glassblower to make all the molds (also very expensive) go through prototyping etc. Not to mention I continually scour the net for wood lamps and if my designs were copied as shown and sold commercially, I wouldn’t hesitate to litigate. Also, having everyone sign an NDA before taking a look was impractical, so I weighed several factors. All that said, if someone sees some element of one of my lamps that they like and want to implement in one of their own pieces, I have no issue with that. I have been a designer for over 20years and recognize that we all learn from one another and designs are assemblies of elements drawn from a number of influences. On another note, I have decided to build all the prototypes myself and once those are complete, I will look again for someone to produce them. I am guessing it is the prototyping that noone wants to deal with, and I get that. I probably should have approached it that way to begin with. |
