Hi Lynne. You have seen the ones I make. I cut a board down the center and run both have through the jointer to insure a real flat glue joint.
Then I layout where I want the ball ends of the rattle( of the style I make). If the heads are to be 1 3/4” diameter. I bore two holes on the center of those ball ends using a round end spade bit but you can use a forstner bit. I figure on about a .200” wall . So for a 1 3/4” ball ..half of that is .875 ( 7/8”). I bore the holes about 650”- 675” deep. Then I insert two 1/4” steel balls in each end and glue it up. Make sure you transfer the centers of the balls to the out side of the glued up block so you know where to locate them in the finished product. I turn it round and layout the 1 3/4” diameter and cut it to shape. I cut it free when done and round the ends on a finishing sander.
