Many folks sharpen the chain while it’s on the bar, professionals included, so I don’t think you need to worry about the filings.

I just sharpened a chain yesterday, after dulling it on Oak. I use an electric sharpener, this being the second one. Wore the first one out. Prior to that I used a file, but it was too slow if I had more than one chain. Even the $30 electric sharpener at Harbor Freight works good if used properly. That’s what I started with and finally wore out. Now I have a more expensive unit.

If a fellow has one chainsaw and rarely uses it, then sharpening by file is all he needs. That said, the HF sharpener is worth the $30.
