I don’t use a machine, just a round file with a guide to sharpen. However, to your question… it seems like if the chain will turn one way easily, and hard the other, then you would just sharpen in the direction that it turns easily. Otherwise, take the chain off to sharpen – should just need to remove the bar nuts.
