On a deeper router bowl, the bits hardly get enough depth to do 1 1/2” bowls, which are often mistaken for cutting boards. For more depth a bit extension is used. Like most things to do with woodworking tools one that is bargain cheap probably isn’t as safe as one designed to go deep. I have a CMT extension, and a few bowl bits, and they work just fine.
