Epoxy can indeed be used a finish. You can thin it out with denatured alcohol to get a fluid consistency. A friend of mine and I have been doing this for many years. We both still have test pieces nearly twenty years old. I am on the coast and he is fifteen miles inland where it gets to 100 degrees. In both environments the finish and the wood have held up well. There is natural discoloring from the sun for years like most outdoor furniture or decks. We have used West Systems initially but it is expensive. I settled on Resin Research for its superior optical qualities. It is best to use a scale to measure the quantities rather than by graduated cylinder. You can add as much or as little (to a point) to get a brush on viscosity like stain or oil. Try buying a small 5 minute epoxy mixer syringe and experiment with the alcohol. It is a bulletproof finish.
