I item I have made quite a few of and the kitchen people (cooks) always seem to enjoy them is trivets like the one pictured here. I prefer to use Beech wood and finish them with processed Walnut oil but linseed oil would work….not mineral oil however. I have made them in all sizes from 6”X6” to 12 X 18. If you make a tray to go under the larger ones they also serve as a bread slicing board and the crumbs drop into the tray.
From a solid board you just lay out your 1/2 dado lines cut the dado then slice the pieces off the board; sand if needed and assemble with a little glue on the joint.
