The Lee Valley straight edge was the best one I could find but I ll check out that link that you posted. So what is happening when I edge joint 2 boards and put them together I m getting a small gap on either end or one end if I clamp them together, not much but probably enough to throw things out of whack if I m doing a table top.

With what you have done, I think, you should look to technique now. I have a 12 inch Jet with helical inserts and if you are edge jointing the diagonal measurement you are getting shouldn’t matter. Try moving your fence forward and taking smaller cuts. There is a way to spin a board on edge to see if it is convex or concave. Concave won’t spin and convex has a high spot near the middle and will spin. Try that to see if you are reducing the ends the way you should be.
