Makita 2040 came from factory with ‘stop’ ring part #53 on parts list clamped to one post. Plan was to use it as stop to plane all lumber to same thickness. This would prevent the table from going up, but not down. If table is fully down, then look for ring with wing nut clamp bolt on one of columns.

The height mechanism is in middle of planer, under the bed. Uses 90 degree pinion on screw lift. So be sure to check the pressure on handle creates any tension or movement of the screw? Getting penetrating oil into that space if table is fully down will be a challenge. May have to partially tear down the lift mechanism or detach it from underside of table and manually lift table up out of way.

Don’t own one, can’t help more. Had manuals on hand as I looked into buying one of those last year and decided against due asking price .vs condition.

Best Luck.
