If the strip is of the same material as the “barn door” rail and glued in place, strength should not be an issue. Just keep in mind that if the outer face of the strip is flush with the legs and the hinge barrel is at that edge, the lid will still only open to 90 degrees and the overhang will hit the legs at that point. This could be an advantage as the lip and the leg will form a prop to hold the lid open. A slight taper on the bottom of the lid edge would allow the lid to swing slightly past 90 degrees and make it somewhat more stable when open.
I still like the articulated hinge idea better if you can find one that will make the lid clear the legs when opening.
