I m planning a small box build to give as a gift and got a router bit box set that includes a decorative profile bit for the sides of the box and a profile for decorative feet. I m thinking I can glue up the sides of the box first, using miters at the corners, and then route the profile on the box sides. This way, the profiles will be a perfect match at the corners (assuming my mitered joints are good to begin with).

I have never seen it done this way and am wondering why? My primary concern would be that routing the box would put stress on the mitered joints and lead to failure. Is there anything else I m missing on this?

Just go ahead and build it the way you think best. The Heck with the rules and the way others do it.
