I agree—the end grain is likely a problem—if you are using wood glue. Need a generous amount of glue.

Maybe you can add a pin nail or something close the substrate (toe nail) to hold it until the glue dries?

I find it hard to believe that proximity to the ocean is causing this—unless maybe it is extremely humid and causing the wood to swell—maybe that could break the bond—doubtful. Good luck.
