there is nothing wrong with painting mahogany – I have done it many times.
is there a way you could fill the cavity with a fiberglass panel and scab it in ??
then you would have a solid fiberglass dash ready for any new equipment and gauges.
lots of grinding, sanding and coating out – but would look great !!
I make transoms for outboard boats using plain B/CX from the Box Store.
not even marine grade – epoxy it just right and it will last for the life of the boat.

[but, if you have been around boats long enough, you already know the tricks of the trade].
