Tommy – I just recently found out the secret of the “S” stamped into a log.
they are of different sizes hammered into a potential problematic crack or split
to try to contain or minimize the damage to good lumber.

and it appears that the newer style Flitch or Log Savers are plastic so they
will not damage saws or planers like the old metal style.
and it takes a special FlitchSaver hammer to pound them in.
