Ebay has a bunch of varying quality. I’d probably steer clear of the cheapest ones, though some people have been running them with no trouble.

Static phase converters are harder on the windings and lose a third of the HP, but they’re cheap and simple, it’s true. But why turn your 5 HP into a 3.3HP motor?

The reason you get a VFD isn’t necessarily because you want to vary the speed of the motor, it’s because you get full HP in a 3ph motor using 1ph wiring, all for less than the cost of replacing it with a new 1ph motor. Variable speed is a bonus feature you can use or not.
