Hey Matt,
I fairly new to woodworking too. I started purchasing hand planes several years back both new and vintage. Both are good options and restoring old one’s is rewarding in my opinion. Deffinetly buy some hand planes. So for what it’s worth, if you have a local shop that you could throw a few bucks to run the top in a belt sander that would save you some time. Not to discourage you from handplaning your table top it just takes some setup and practice. Sounds like a fun project! Best of luck. Kyle.
