Hey Everyone
I am getting into wood working and tackling my first “real project”. I am making an island countertop out of maple. I have everything glued up and the results were better than I expected however some of the boards are slightly higher than the other. After doing a ton of research online, including here it appears the best choice would be to use a hand plane to flatten everything out. However to purchase a quality product it’s a bit more than I want to spend.

I was thinking of going online and purchasing a used one that would need some tuning up but not sure what to really look for. Has anyone tackled that project? On EBay there are plenty of options of some quality name brand products but they all need a little bit of work

Thanks!

Oh my friend….. You are new! Welcome to the site. For what it’s worth, tuning up or fully restoring a plane or anything in between has been done by many. Here's a blog series I did on a fully restoration of a vintage plane. There are many others on this site that have done similar blogs as well. LJ Don W has a site, timetestedtools.net where you can find tons of information on planes, restoring them, tuning them and where you can buy a vintage plane that’s been tuned and ready to go to work if you prefer that route.
