You can try a more viscous glue. A medium thickness will help reduce the spread and penetration into the grain. If that’s too thick, Starbond makes one they refer to as heavy thin, which is kind of in between medium and thin.

I tried all sorts of sealers and found that they were as much of a problem to remove as the glue itself. Going a bit thicker helped.
