I had another thought: making a longer swivel arm to replace the short one on the clamp. A piece of maple would be plenty strong for that.

The thing is, it’s not really the height of the fence that’s an issue, it’s not being able to clamp to it. Fences on miter saws are actually just backstops, because you’re not using them as cutting guides like you do on a table saw, router table, jointer, or shaper fence.
