Other than already mentioned maybe the same as punky wood.
Turn close to the shape then start coating with a sanding sealer to harden the wood. I use 1 part shellac to 2 parts DNA. Dries fairly quickly. You will probably need to add new sealer at least every 1/8 -1/4” removed.
