Thanks everyone for chiming in. Figured it out. I assumed since it was already in place, it was factory installed and skipped the step of securing the spreader into the assembly. Once I did, I saw I was indeed, as you all stated, supposed to turn the orange lever down to lock. The diagram they give is rather confusing- makes it look like if you want through cuts, keep the orange lever up. Having it down keeps the spreader secure and I cannot pull it out by hand.
Tomorrow, I finally get to fire it up! Can’t wait!
