I would treat them with some sort of sealer. The MDF is relatively soft and adding a hard finish to those cut out surfaces can only make them stronger and more durable; at least it did mine. I would also seal the bottom although you don’t particularly have seasonally changing humidity problem in most of Calif. I use a top layer of 3/4” MDF on my work benches and I seal them with poly to make it more durable and resistant to glue and other spills. Shellac, poly, or lacquer will all work so use what you may have.
