Next time you can try scoring a line before
cutting. A marking gauge with a knife on it
would work well for that. You could also
try a shallow pass on the table saw to sever
the fibers using a finishing blade.

I think I had decent results using 1/2” prefinished
maple. Perhaps the finish controlled tearout.
The bit I used was also not the cheapest.

As mentioned above, I decided eventually it
wasn’t worth the hassle. Looks cool though.
