There’s ways around it, but basically if you’re going to work with any rough cut lumber, you’ll need a jointer to surface one side of the board before running it through the planer. Or you’ll have issues with both faces of the board not being parallel

People want the 8” jointer because a lot of the rough cut lumber will come in 6” widths.
