The one I had as a kid was painted. The ones I built for my kids were finished in one coat of Danish oil. You know what happened when they got splashed? Nothing. Both are still going strong 20+ years later. No grip tape or sand but you can feel the woodgrain. Kids are alive and well, un-maimed. The more layers of film finish you put on, the slicker it will be when wet. A little water isn t going to hurt the wood.

School district custodians like easy as possible surfaces to wipe/dust/down. Edit to add, we didn’t have a choice on the safety grip.
