Ive colored a lot of different woods to various colors. I use dyes, and they are various methods, just dpends on the wood and desired ends. Depends on what you have available on your island. I think birch likes to blotch, so this may help..

Yes you can color birch to a mahogany color – whatever that is, meaning a mahogany stain or the actual wood? The grain wont look like it but the color will. I typically use a dye in a stain base with solids, then mix dye in shellac for a toner and spray to even out the color and add intensity. “Depth” is more a function of finish gloss and clarity.
