A couple of weeks ago I was trying to buy a Stanley 71 router plane off Ebay. After bidding on about 5 different planes I gave up. It seems that the old Stanley are going for the same price as a new Veritas plane if they are in real good shape. After putting in a maximum bid of 75.00 for one in fair shape I lost out for a winning bid of over a hundred dollars. Soooooo, I went to Lee Valley web site and bought a new Veritas with the fence for 169.00. While on a mini spending spree, I sprung for the beading tool also. Hopefully I will get a chance to give them both a workout this weekend. I can see now what everyone is talking about when they say veritas planes are top notch in quality.. I hope it works as good as it looks.

Congrats on the purchase!
I've been looking too for Stanley 71 router plane on ebay. I agree the prices are really high.
I've about come to you exact same conclusion and spend $200 on the Veritas version with a fence. Also you get the jig for sharpening as well, right?
If im not mistaken doesn't the Stanley 71 cutters work in it also?

Yes the cutters are the same. I bought the kit which includes the fence for i believe 169.00. I'd much rather have the veritas than an old stanley. Really their made just alike but with the veritas your getting a new router other than a used one that could be warped or possibly not flat. Glad I looked at the lee valley site and saw the price.

The prices of the old Stanley's has gone thru the roof over the last year or so. The old cutters aren't cheap either on eBay.
