Good point. Anyone could put anything in a pill and say it would cure everything, and people used to do that. (they still do that). Or outright put poisons in products (also still happens). Which is why we have the FDA. Read up on the dangers of the 19th and early 20th centuries, and how many people died or suffered illnesses or birth defects because companies put profit ahead of public health and then muddle the political landscape with false science. Boric acid in milk to hide spoilage. Arsenic in makeups, jewelry, clothing, toys, and wallpaper. Lead in paint and water pipes (which unfortunately continued in America up through the 60’s, long after it was banned everywhere else). Gas companies would shut off gas at night to save money and then turn it back on in the morning, killing people and causing fires. The FDA might not be a perfect institution, none are, because they are just groups of people and people will always be fallible. But we still need organizations like the FDA, EPA, CDC, etc.
