Trip to sawmill recently I learned there are two thickness scales, hardwood and softwood. Softwood is cut a little thinner. Didn’t know that.

Varies somewhat, but some distributors price lumber at the original dimension off the mill. So a 7 1/2” wide board is figured at 8”. Another placed I went to just lined up all the boards on the fork lift, measured the total width and figured from there (of course I didn’t say a word….).

A word of advice, when you go to the sawmill, don’t cherry pick too much. I always just take some bad with the good and I’ll tell you what, more often than not they will throw in a few extra boards.
