I think you’re just fine to put those legs where you want them. Sure the front edge doesn’t have direct support, but houses get framed with 2×4’s so they are more than enough to support the foot or so from the legs to the front.

I think the diagonal is not necessary at all if you have legs.

Given you want those legs out of the way, I’d consider not having legs, and just running the diagonal all the way to the wall. You’d get plenty of support at the front edge, and no legs at all. Of course the diagonal needs to be well attached to the wall.

I’m not sure what your proposed spacing is between legs (or diagonals). But every 4 ft should be good with 2×4 construction. And I wouldn’t hesitate to have a 6 foot span.

FYI, becasue of the legs, the workbench is not a cantilever design. It would be a cantilever design if the only support were from the wall.
