That should work! I may have to make one like that myself. If you need a tighter bend, you could replace that cap with a reducing fitting and screw a smaller pipe to the top.

BTW, curling irons can often be found pretty cheaply at garage sales and Amazon has several that are between 1” to 2” diameter for under $20.
