I liked the inverted drill bit trick – will remember that one for the future. I’ve used the 2nd one before, but used a HSS tool bit that I had left over from my Tool & Die Maker/Machinist days. To adjust for a specific diameter I would clamp an angle bracket with a threaded hole in it to the table & thread a machine screw to push against the holding vice to remove a small amount of wood from the dowel. The depth setting on the drill would determine the length of cut.
